Location: Hillman School
TBCHS is looking to add a school nurse to Hillman Schools who will provide health care services to students by performing the following duties:
- Displays courtesy and sensitivity while managing difficult and emotional customer situations. Solicits feedback to improve service and responds promptly to customer’s needs.
- Schedules time off in advance to ensure proper coverage for department. Also begins working on time and works independently throughout the day until it is time to end shift.
- Accepts responsibility for own actions and is able to meet commitments. Asks for help when appropriate from immediate supervisor.
- Able to follow policies and procedures while supporting the goals and values of the organization. Also promotes a positive work environment for staff of all departments offering support while working cooperatively with all co-workers.
- Expresses ideas and thoughts effectively. Displays confident communication skills and exhibits good listening. Keeps other adequately informed while selecting appropriate forms of communication.
- Shows a strong initiative and willingness to learn, continually strives to increase personal productivity. Always treats others with respect and consideration as committing to do the best job possible.
- Plans school health programs, in cooperation with medical authority, Clinical Services Director, Program Manager School Based Health Center, and administrative school personnel.
- Assists in program for care of disabled children within scope of license.
- Works with community agencies to further meet the needs of children outside of school.
- Assesses students’ ability to access needed health care services and eligibility for appropriate programs/services.
- Participates in school health committees or work groups as time permits.
- Educates students in good health habits.
- Instructs classes in subjects such as hygiene, sexually acquired diseases, AIDS/HIV, age appropriate growth and development.
- Appropriately and efficiently forwards all documented encounters to billing department.
- Provides nursing assessment based on the triaged needs of the student.
- Manages difficult or emotional students effectively
- Responds timely/promptly to students needs
- Prioritizes appropriately for emergent situations
- Provides first-aid and administers prescribed student medication as necessary.
- Maintains contact with parents/guardians and staff regarding individual student health needs.
- Cooperates with school personnel in identifying and meeting social, emotional, and physical needs of school children.
- Visits student homes when necessary.
- Responsible for the requesting and maintaining equipment and supplies.
- Disinfection of instruments/equipment per protocol.
- Participates in Thunder Bay Community Health Service’s health promotion and outreach efforts (ie: health screenings, sports physicals) in conjunction with the TBCHS Outreach Coordinator.
- Participates in meetings, all mandatory in-service and performance improvement/OSHA programs for Thunder Bay Community Health Service, Inc.
- Assists in the development of policies and procedures.
- Continuing Education – updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities on a regular basis
- Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following, and enforcing standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations, and OSHA/MIOSHA.
- Maintains patient privacy and protects operations by keeping patient care information confidential in accordance with HIPAA
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Associate’s degree (ADN) or equivalent college or technical school (e.g. diploma nurse, AS in nursing) RN required.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: BLS Required at hire and Current and valid State of Michigan RN license
